GLP-1 telehealth programs advertise one number, but that number can mean three different things. In a membership model, the fee pays for the clinician and the app, and the medication is a separate purchase. In an all-inclusive model, the checkout price covers the consultation, the medication, and usually shipping. In a dose-based model, the program shows a range and confirms the amount after the prescriber chooses a strength. Why a membership fee is not a medication fee

A membership fee is a subscription to a clinical service. It typically covers the intake questionnaire, the prescriber's review, follow-up messaging, and dose adjustments. Ro's pricing page describes its membership as covering access to FDA-approved GLP-1s, on-demand provider support, and side-effect management, and then states that the cost of medication is not included in the membership fee. Sesame Care's Wegovy page says the same about its program fee and tells members to have the Sesame provider send the prescription to the NovoCare pharmacy for the cash price.

For brand drugs that arrangement is structural. Wegovy and Zepbound are sold by Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly, and their self-pay channels, NovoCare Pharmacy and LillyDirect, bill the patient directly for the drug. A telehealth membership for a brand drug is therefore always an addition to the manufacturer's price, never a substitute for it. For compounded drugs the medication charge goes to the program or its partner pharmacy, and the membership fee may or may not be folded into it.

What the FTC requires a headline price to disclose

Hiding the medication cost behind an advertised program price is not just confusing; it is the conduct the FTC has already acted on. In its December 3, 2025 final order against the telehealth provider NextMed, the FTC charged the company with selling weight-loss programs with undisclosed costs and membership commitments, using fake testimonials, failing to process cancellation and refund requests in a timely manner, and charging consumers without express informed consent. The order requires NextMed to clearly disclose important terms relating to refunds or cancellations before consumers are asked to pay and to provide a simple way to request cancellations or refunds.

The underlying statute is the Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act, which requires an online seller with recurring charges to disclose clearly all material terms of the transaction and to obtain the consumer's express informed consent before charging. A separate complaint filed by the FTC, the State of Utah, and Los Angeles County against Hims & Hers on July 29, 2026 alleges deceptive billing and cancellation practices; it is a pending complaint, not a finding. The pattern across both is the same: the total cost, including medication, has to be visible before the card is charged.

Does the price include the consultation, labs, and shipping?

The consultation is the second most common hidden line. Sprout Health's terms say every checkout price includes the mandatory doctor consultation, and TelePep says the consult fee is part of the price rather than a separate item. CoreAge Rx takes the opposite approach: its refund policy keeps the provider consultation fee even when the provider declines to prescribe, and returns only the medication portion. GobyMeds' terms allow it to charge or retain a consultation or clinical-review fee from a refund. Found's insurance track bills a required video visit through the member's insurance at the visit copay, while its self-pay plan folds the visit into the plan price.

Shipping is usually included for compounded programs, and Ageless states free shipping on all orders on its product page. Labs are rarely part of a GLP-1 price and are more often a separate order or an insurance claim. Read for each of these individually; a page that says medication is included may still charge for the visit.

Why the price can change after the prescriber picks a dose

Dose-based pricing is the third way the advertised number can differ from the charge. Ageless publishes a price range for its semaglutide product and states that exact pricing depends on the prescribed dose and the final amount is shown after clinical review. That is honest disclosure, but it means the lowest number on the page is a floor, not a quote.

Manufacturer channels split the same way. Lilly's self-pay Zepbound KwikPen price rises with dose, while Novo Nordisk charges one price for every Wegovy pen dose from 0.25 mg to 2.4 mg. A telehealth program prescribing either drug inherits that structure, so a program that quotes a starting price is quoting the lowest dose. How to read a GLP-1 telehealth price page in five checks

Run these before entering a card number. Each one is a question the program's own terms should answer in plain words.

• Find the word medication on the pricing or FAQ page and read the sentence around it. Included, not included, or billed separately are the three possible answers.
• Find the consultation or provider fee and check whether it is refunded if the clinician declines to prescribe.
• Find the dose. If the page shows a range or a starting price, ask what your likely dose costs and whether higher doses cost more.
• Find the renewal. Note whether the first month is a promotional rate and what month two costs.
• Find the pharmacy. For brand drugs, confirm the prescription can go to NovoCare Pharmacy or LillyDirect; for compounded drugs, confirm the pharmacy is named and state-licensed.
